Tanzania travel insurance

Good insurance is essential for any safari, and since 2026 Tanzania also requires visitors to buy a government travel insurance policy. Here is how the two fit together.

Mandatory government travel insurance

  • Mainland Tanzania: regulations published in 2026 require most foreign visitors to buy an inbound travel insurance policy of about US$44, issued by the National Insurance Corporation (NIC). It is valid for up to 92 days and covers emergency medical treatment, evacuation, repatriation and baggage loss.
  • Zanzibar: has required its own US$44 policy from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC) since October 2024.
  • The policies can be bought online before travel or on arrival. It is not yet confirmed whether one policy covers both mainland and Zanzibar, so we check this for your itinerary.
  • Residents of East African Community and SADC countries are generally exempt.

Why you still need private insurance

The government policy has limited cover. Choose a comprehensive policy that includes:

  • Medical treatment and air evacuation to Nairobi or home
  • Pre-existing medical conditions, declared in full
  • Cover for wheelchairs, mobility aids and medical equipment, including damage by airlines
  • Trip cancellation and curtailment
  • Hot air balloon flights and any activities you plan
